What Happened to G.C.A.R.E.S.?
Genesee County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Inc as many knew was a separate corporation formed as a non profit group under the laws of the State of Michigan and held a Tax Except status through the Federal Internal Revenue Service which is known as a 501(c) 3 Status.
Due to some mistakes by previous boards many years ago that status was placed in Jeopardy. Following much discussion with a lawyer and weeks of investigation, members of the present board found only one way to protect the equipment and assets of Genesee County Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Inc. That process was to create a new Non-Profit Corporation with the State of Michigan and File new papers for that Corporation with the Federal Government for Tax Exempt Status. This action started at the end of January with the drafting of a new set of Bylaws for the new corporation and the filing Articles of Incorporation with the State of Michigan.
With that process complete the Board of Directors by Majority Vote, with one vote against, donated the assets of Genesee County Amateur Radio Emergency Services to the new Corporation known as The Michigan Specialized Communications Group.
Generally this change will appear transparent to the majority of the membership and to our served agencies. New applications for membership will be available at the Skywarn class and they are also available here on the web site as well as a copy of the board of directors. The biggest change that you as the member will see is when we are paged out for our services we will be operating under the name of Michigan Amateur Radio Emergency Teams (M.A.R.E.T). The Organization still operates with ARES and RACES and we plan on expanding our circle of served agencies to include the Genesee County Sheriffs Department, The Salvation Army, The Red Cross, Search and Rescue Operations, The Genesee County Fire Departments, The Flint Fire Department and other organizations.
